How NEBOSH Qualifications Can Help Your Career

If you look at any Health and Safety job advertisement under the essential qualifications you will always find NEBOSH General Certificate there as a minimum requirement. Why is that? NEBOSH is the recognised standard by which all organisations from every sector around the world go. If someone has a NEBOSH qualification you know that they have an amazing foundation in Health and Safety as it’s certainly not the easiest of qualifications to attain.

Why should you undertake a NEBOSH course?

If you successfully pass a NEBOSH General Certificate you become a qualified Health and Safety practitioner. That certainly opens doors in terms of career. As it’s such a sort after qualification it can allow you to change careers into the Health and Safety profession in a completely new role, move into a Health and Safety role internally within your organisation or just help with continuing professional development (CPD) that may help you get a promotion. NEBOSH General Certificate also can help you on your way with IOSH chartered membership which is also desirable by employers. IOSH Managing Safely also provides a good foundation for Health and Safety for those who want a bit more knowledge about Health and Safety but do not want or need to be practitioners. The NEBOSH certificate is also a good stepping stone to the NEBOSH Diploma in Health and Safety Management for those who wish to develop their career in Health and Safety Leadership.

My Story

Ian Stephenson (Director at 16 Degree Shift Training and Consultancy Ltd)

I myself am a NEBOSH course success story. I worked for a Semiconductor Manufacturer as a Chemist and the industry succumbed to decline and the business was going to close and make everyone redundant. Must admit I started to panic as I had a young family to support but it also gave me the opportunity to evaluate my career choices as I felt my role as a Chemist wasn’t achieving any great purpose for either myself or the business and I’d lost my passion for it.

The company offered employees re-training as part of the redundancy package and NEBOSH General Certificate was one of the courses on offer. I wasn’t massively keen on the idea of Health and Safety but thought it was a good fall back option with the qualification being so sort after. Well I soon found I loved the course and could see why everybody raved about it. I knew that I wanted to pass on this knowledge to others on how to protect people in their organisation and to go home safe and well each day. I’m so passionate about the value of the NEBOSH courses to organisations and I’m still here nearly 15 years later having a successful career as a NEBOSH trainer and have a gold standard NEBOSH training centre.

How NEBOSH qualifications have helped some of our customers

Lee Hall (H&S Manager at GEMS Education, Dubai, UAE)

“Having just started my H&S career in 2008; as a H&S specialist for IKEA, I already had a fundamental understanding of H&S which I had gained from completing a number of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) qualifications. I knew however, that if I wanted to build on my knowledge base and progress further in my career, then I would need to undertake additional more in-depth qualifications.

It was at this point when I was first introduced to Ian. I had decided to complete the NEBOSH General Certificate and had been told about Ian a colleague of Brian. At that time, I didn’t know how much of a significant impact both Ian and Brian would have on my H&S career.

Completing the certificate was extremely challenging but rewarding at the same time. Ian who I spent most of my learning time with; was an extremely confident and adaptable trainer. He gave me all the time I needed to fully understand the course content, and nothing was too much trouble. I found that he was able to take, the sometimes complex content, and convey it in such a way that it made it easy to absorb and understand. This was evident when I completed my exams and achieved a distinction, something that I attribute to the studying and learning techniques I had been taught throughout the course.

Since completing the diploma in 2012, I have gone on to successfully complete a number of other NEBOSH courses putting in to practice the learning principals that I was taught by Ian. I am now currently based in the UAE working for the world’s largest privately owned education provider, and as I have said previously, I truly believe that my success as a H&S professional can be attributed not only to holding the highly regarded NEBOSH qualifications, but the support and guidance Ian offered me at the beginning of my career.”

Michael Butler (QSHE Manager at Bel Valves)

“When I started my career within health and safety I was looking for advice from experts in the field to support my career progression. Ian Stephenson and Brian Rabot were highly recommended within the field and they have supported me through health and safety consultancy, training and ultimately completing my NEBOSH Diploma in occupational health and safety.

When I was first met Ian Stephenson in 2015, I needed support for the company I worked for at the time following a HSE visit.  His advice, support and training allowed my company to show a huge improvement and enable compliance.  After a second inspection, the HSE was happy with no further action and the company continued a good standard of compliance.

The training and advice provided by Brian Rabot and Ian Stephenson has fully supported my career progression.  The NEBOSH Diploma in particular is a highly sought-after qualification from hiring managers and is an achievement I am personally proud of.

I trust Ian Stephenson of 16 Degree Shift Training and Consultancy Ltd to offer affordable, clear, slick, concise solutions for health and safety needs”

Marianne Follin  (Logistics Process Lead at Thermo Fisher Scientific)

“Some years ago, I was studying the NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety at Northumbria University.  The course was being funded by my employer at that time. Unfortunately, the company I was working for went into administration and subsequently could not continue to fund the Diploma. Brian Rabot was one of my lecturers at the time and he agreed to allow me to continue my studies at the lower level of NEBOSH Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety at Newcastle College where he and his team were contracted to deliverer this qualification. Doing this course meant I could get a professional qualification in health and safety quicker which meant I would have more job prospects sooner.  Given the company I had been working for has just closed this was a smart move and I welcomed and followed the advice from Brian.

The help I received on the NEBOSH Certificate course was brilliant and the class was a size where everyone was able to build close relationships and each person could learn at their own pace. I completed the course and passed.  With my qualification I went on to gain a role for a huge FTSE 250 Manufacturing company and became a SHEQ Coordinator.

During my employment, Brian and his team advised me to complete a NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate, which I also passed.

I now work for a Global Pharmaceutical Manufacturer/Distributor company where my role has expanded into Logistics.  All my knowledge, experience and training so far has stood me in great stead to get this role and continue to make progress in my career as a health and safety professional.

The team was always on hand and so supportive and I will be forever grateful for making the choice to use them and would never hesitate to use them again for further development and training.”
