Course Structure & Content

Better Incident and Accident Investigation Makes Perfect Sense

Are all accidents and incidents reported and effectively investigated in your place or work?

Do the same accidents keep happening and is it only a matter of time before a serious accident happens? Do these accidents point to areas of weakness within the safety management system?

Are your current accident investigations well documented with root causes identified and clear actions to prevent a reoccurrence stated?

Would your current accident investigation reports stand up to examination by the HSE or provide suitable evidence in defence of a civil claim?

Are you aware of your legal duties under the reporting of injuries diseases and dangerous occurrences regulations (RIDDOR)?

If those questions have prompted a need for action – what needs to shift?

To support you and your organisation in protecting your workforce and meeting legal requirements, 16 Degree Shift Training and Consultancy Ltd bring you a one-day accident and incident investigation training course.

16 Degree Shift Training and Consultancy Ltd believe that effective systems for the investigating accidents process and the right training for your staff could prevent accidents from reoccurring and therefore prevent further injuries to your staff or others affected by your work.

This course coupled up with our risk assessment training course would be a great combination as review of risk assessments is a necessary corrective action that results from the investigation process.

If proper root cause analysis is not undertaken as part of the investigation, there is a much higher chance of accidents happening again which may result in a more serious injury as well as more business disruption and downtime. The company’s reputation may also be negatively affected. Real life case studies demonstrate what happens when organisations get it wrong:

“DFS fined £1m following worker’s head injuries

DFS Trading Limited has been fined after safety failings which led to serious neck and head injuries of a worker.

Derby Magistrates’ Court heard that on 02 July 2015 the worker was unloading wooden furniture frames at one of their upholstery sites, when he was struck by an unsecured furniture arm which fell from an unstable load.

“The fundamental and systemic failings identified in their health and safety management systems is far from what would be expected from a company of their size” – HSE

The impact knocked him unconscious and he suffered serious neck and head injuries.

The court heard the company also failed to supervise the work taking place with a number of near misses being reported from unsecured loads.

Getting incident investigation right is easier than you think and with the right commitment, training and strategy, your business could make the necessary improvement in accident reporting, recording and investigation.

Having more staff with the knowledge and skills to carry out a robust accident investigation, record and implement the corrective actions and follow them through to completion would certainly go a long way to avoiding the many costs associated with accidents. Training and developing staff will also improve the safety culture of the organisation, significantly improving health and safety at work and ensuring you are managing safely.

Remember a HSE inspector does not need a reason to call in to your workplace and if they did, are all your accident investigations of good quality and can the corrective actions be demonstrated to have been implemented?
