NEBOSH stands for ‘The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health’
NEBOSH qualifications are recognised by professional membership bodies including the International Institute of Risk & Safety Management (IIRSM) and the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
On 1 May 2021 NEBOSH launched the new NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction (NCC). This new syllabus replaces NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction and has been developed by NEBOSH following extensive consultation with key stakeholders, notably Learning Partners, employers, standards setting organisations, past and present learners and subject experts.
There are no entry requirements for this qualification and it is ideal for those working in the construction industry in positions such as construction health and safety advisors, construction site managers, contracts managers and site workers with health and safety responsibilities.
NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction provides a valuable overview of the core aspects of construction health and safety, equipping you with the skills for health and safety management on constructions sites. This relevant and respected NEBOSH Construction certificate will help you to:

Meet the academic requirements for the issue of the ‘Academically Qualified Person’ CSCS Card. Understanding the responsibilities of the CDM Regulations and gain legal compliance
In element one we will cover the moral and financial arguments for the good management of health and safety, discuss CDM regulations and the scope and typical types of issues to expect with construction activities. We will give detail on site assessment and control measures, site security, discuss welfare arrangements and how to manage temporary works.
Element two will cover health and safety culture and the relationship between culture and health and safety performance. We’ll discuss how human factors can influence both positive and negative behaviour and how to improve health and safety culture. We will go through the process of risk assessment.
Element three covers management of change, safe systems of work and permit to work, emergency procedures, incident investigation and how to learn from incidents. Excavation will be discussed in element four covering excavation work hazards, assessment and control measures. We will also go into detail on safe working practices of confined spaces. We will then go over demolition in element five discussing the purpose and scope of pre-demolition, deconstruction or refurbishment survey and gaining knowledge on demolition and dismantling hazards.
Element six will cover mobile plant and vehicles. You’ll learn about how to ensure safe movement of people, safe use of vehicles and plant and discuss work related driving and driver safety. Working at height is covered in element seven looking at the hazards and controls, safe working practices for access equipment and roof work and protection for others in the vicinity.
Manual handling hazards and controls are covered in element eight as well as examples of load handling equipment and their benefits and limitations. We also discuss musculoskeletal disorders and work-related upper limb disorders. You will learn about general requirements of work equipment, handheld tools and machinery hazards and controls.
Element ten covers electricity hazards, risks and control measures. This will also cover both working with underground cables and overhead power lines. You will learn about the management of fire safety in element eleven discussing fire principles, preventing fire and spread and looking at fire alarms, detection and firefighting. Chemical and biological agents will be discussed in element twelve covering hazardous substances, specific agents and how they can impact health and how to assess health risks and appropriate control measures. The final element will cover physical and psychological health. This will include looking at the impacts of noise, vibration and radiation on health. You will also learn about mental ill health, violence at work and substance abuse at work.
Course Assessment
Our learning materials have been updated to reflect this new syllabus. The new assessment strategy involves an Open Book Examamination (OBE). You will have 48 hours to download, complete and submit your assessment. The assessment will be based on a fictional construction site, which includes theoretical and practical application questions and a scenario-based risk assessment exercise. Candidates therefore are required to understand and articulate knowledge from the elements in the taught content.

Length of the Course:
Approximately 68 taught hours which equates to 10 days of with additional revision and support and around 40 hours of private study required. The exam should take around 8 hours to do within a 48 hour time limit. The course will take place in the classroom and live online with a tutor.

NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction (UK) is recognised as suitable for membership by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) and the Association for Project Safety (APS). You will also be eligible to apply for the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Academically Qualified Person (AQP) card.
NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction (UK) has been accredited and credit rated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) Accreditation. It sits in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) at SCQF Level 6 with 12 SCQF credit points. SCQF Level 6 is comparable to RQF/CQFW Level 3 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
