We ran our first NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate to the new syllabus this March. The NEBOSH environmental course begins with a general introduction into environmental management and sustainability, highlighting the importance of environmental performance improvement for businesses. We then looked at management systems and the various benefits such as managing risks, cost savings, improving reputation, reducing environmental impacts and understanding issues to support decision making.
Over subsequent days we covered the main environmental impacts, air pollution, contamination of water, waste generation, energy consumption, noise nuisance and managing environmental emergencies.
There were lots of activities for learners to apply their newly gained knowledge and skills and there were lots of lively conversations and contributions of examples of learner experiences which really added to the enjoyment of the course. The learners took part in a practical workplace inspection and got to use their creative sides to repurpose a difficult to recycle waste. They also had an assignment to do a small presentation to the group, to which one learner made a fantastic song about solar power which was unexpected good fun.
The learners had the opportunity to undergo a mock exam in preparation for the exam and had tutor support with exam technique. As part of the final assessment the learners also had to complete an environmental impact assessment which is an integral part of environmental management which I think they all appreciated gaining experience of.
